If you want to be good at something you must practice. Period. In public speaking when you practice you’ll know:
• Your timing: You can be certain of exactly how long your speech will run so you are not over or under the time allotted to you.
• Your script: You’ll know what you want to say and how you want to say it.
• Your inflection and areas of emphasis: This will help your audience pinpoint what’s important and easily be able to follow your presentation.
When you practice make sure you do the following as closely as possible:
1. Stand up: It’s important to practice your speech with the same body position as you will when you deliver it. Just like the elite athletes listed above actually get out and DO their sports, you need to get up and DO your speech.
2. Speak out loud: Your voice should have the same power and inflection that you will use when you deliver your speech to a live audience.
3. Multiple times: In order to achieve your desired results, you need to practice more than once. The more you do it, the better you’ll get!
4. All the way through: Practice your speech from beginning to end — not just in bits and pieces.
5. In advance: Don’t wait until the morning of your speech or the night before to practice. You’ll get greater benefits by starting early and working regularly.
Remember what and how you practice your speech is closely related to the results you’ll get when delivering your speech. So simulate the real thing as closely as possible for best results every time.
