Before writing a speech, you must first determine the topic on which you’ll be speaking. Often when given a speaking opportunity, you’ll find yourself in one of two positions: searching desperately for a topic or choosing from a myriad of topics. These simple questions can help you find a topic or define your choices.
Question #1:
Who is your audience? Will you be speaking in a corporate setting or a more relaxed atmosphere? Think of what will be most helpful and valuable to your audience. Think of what will connect with them.
Question #2:
What is your field of expertise or experience? Are you a scientist, doctor, lawyer, author, analyst, project manager, athlete, actor, world traveler? Draw on your vast knowledge and narrow your focus to one particular topic.
Question #3:
What are your areas of interest? Think of topics you’d like to know more about. Then research, do your homework and develop your speech. Share with others what you’re passionate about. Take them on your journey of discovery.
Question #4:
What interesting people or places are in the locale of where you’ll be delivering your speech? Think of ways you can choose a topic and work a local angle into your speech.
Question #5:
Will you be giving your speech near a holiday? Pair the holiday theme with something of interest to your audience. (Note: Best for non-corporate audiences).
As an example, I’ll show you how I picked a topic for one of my speaking opportunities. I considered the following: I would be speaking after dinner to a group of 30 couples near Valentine’s Day. As an author of a book of romantic poetry, I used that as a platform to brainstorm. The venue was a local restaurant and, while we would have a private dining room, space was limited.
As I would be part of a program, I knew that the mood would be light and fun. I chose my speech, ‘Living a Passionate Life,’ to incorporate the romantic holiday theme and created a display using heart-shaped knick knacks, stuffed animals and my poetry books. While the topic could be broad (life could equal family, health, career, spirituality, etc), I narrowed my focus to ‘family’ with a splash of ‘spirituality’ as this was a church group.
Remember that a good topic has a narrow focus. If you feel you’ve chosen a broad topic, find something specific within it. Then build a topic ‘tree’ with the remaining subtopics. You may find that you have not only an idea for this speech but one for your next one as well. A narrow focus on your topic will save time in research and developing your speech.

Effective communication and award-winning presentations must contain great content. Public speaking classes are full of tips on how to hold your hand, stand, and make eye contact. Important as all these habits and techniques are, you have to start with good original content.
Let’s look at how you develop your original content. In my presentation skills training for professional speakers and business speaking training and coaching with executives, I am frequently asked, “What on earth do I speak about? Where do I find good examples?”
Explore Your Experiences
Here is my advice if your goal is to have effective business presentations. This advice applies whether you are in person in front of your audience or deliver your message as a webinar. The secret of developing good content is simply this: you have to live an interesting life and converse with interesting people.
Follow this process for analyzing and organizing your experiences. Make a list of all the people who have influenced you in your life. Lists are a great way to trigger your memory of what you could talk about.
Make a list of every manager and boss you’ve ever worked for. Write down what you learned from them. Even if they were a bad boss, they can serve at least as a pitiful example. Here’s an example: When I was a fifteen-year-old shampoo girl, my first boss was Mr. Paul. I saw him treat every woman who came into our salon, for the time she was there, like she was the only one in the world. He treated the woman who worked as a waitress at the Carlton Hotel as well as the rich little lady who lived in the penthouse at the Carlton Hotel.
When I was young, I thought that was good service. It was nice to treat people well. Now that I’m older, sophisticated, and in business, I reflect back and realize lessons learned that I wasn’t sophisticated enough to understand.
Now that I’m in business, promoting myself, and teaching other people, I realize that the waitress in the Carlton Hotel who talks to a somewhat affluent clientele of 150 to 200 people a day, has a sphere of influence a lot greater than the rich little lady who plays bridge every day with the same half dozen friends.
That’s a lesson. I guarantee your lists will provide lessons learned. As you look at who influenced you and who your bosses were, ask yourself what they taught you and then how that plays out in your life now.
You might also want to remember and record all the turning points: the different jobs, schools, colleges, and seminars; who you met; when you fell in love with an idea, a profession, or a cause, etc. Look at the best advice that you’ve been given.
Conduct Good Market Research
As a hairstylist, I spent twenty-four years behind a hairstyling chair. When I was fifteen, we had many rich, glamorous women as customers. As soon as I got to know them, I used to say, “What were you doing when you were my age? How did you make your money? Did you make it yourself or did you marry it? If you made it yourself, how did you do it? If you married it, where did you meet him?”
My brother, internationally acclaimed guitarist Robert Fripp, is always saying, “Sister, you ask people such personal questions!” During my overlapping careers with twenty-four years behind a hairstyling chair and twenty-five years of going to conferences and speaking and asking questions, nobody has ever said, “That’s none of your damn business.” People love talking about themselves and asking questions is a great way to develop material.
Craft Your Information into a Story
Think about the advice. Think about the lessons learned. The best way to pull out these milestones is to sit down with a friend or a group of your pals who are also interested in developing their public speaking skills and do what I call the “Once upon a time…” technique. Tell a fairy tale of your life as if it was about someone else, and don’t go into too much detail. Here is an example.
“Once upon a time there was a little girl born in England. She had a brother who was one year, one month, two days, twelve-and-a-half hours younger than she was. He was always a very smart kid — top of the class. She worked hard and was about fifteenth in a class of thirty. Her dad sold houses for a living and became a very successful businessperson.
When she was twelve, she decided she was probably more artistic than academic, so she decided to become a hairstylist. When she was fifteen, she left school and served a three-year apprenticeship and really learned about customer service — as well as hairstyling — from her boss.
When she used to go to work on the bus, all her little friends were talking about marrying millionaires, but at fifteen, she realized it’s much better to become a millionaire than to marry one.
When she was eighteen, she left home and went to live on an island off France called Jersey. She worked with sophisticated gentlemen from the west end of London who could do hairstyles she’d never seen before.
However, she thought lunch hours were for squeezing in three extra customers, whereas the other guys thought that lunch hours were for eating lunch. One day her boss told her she actually produced thirty percent more income for the salon, not by being better, but by working much harder. She realized that perhaps tenacity and the willingness to work hard were more valuable than great talent. But where to promote it — obviously the colonies.”
I’ve just gone through my life as if I was talking about someone else, almost as if it were a fairy tale. Go through your time line using the “Once upon a time …” technique. Then get your friends to ask you the questions that are stimulated from your time line. Note the high points, what your friends are interested in hearing about, what people ask you about at a cocktail party when they know what you do for a living, and what your interests are. These are the type of things that an audience would want to know.
Your lists and life timeline can help you develop content and material for your presentations. Every single day, carry around a notepad and reflect at the end of the day. Ask yourself, “What happened to me today that could one day be used in a speech?” If you had good customer service or bad customer service, it’s still a story and an example. Search your life for the stories that have a message. Now use what you’ve learned to develop good, original content.

To be considered a great public speaker, you need to start from the beginning: crafting an engaging speech. The task may seem daunting but by breaking it down into small parts, even the most reluctant writer can create an interesting and impressive speech. Some speakers utilize the services of speech writers to ensure the quality of their material; their expertise lies within the delivery of the speech. However, many of us cannot afford that luxury and need to write our own. Follow the following 5 Tips for Writing a Public Speech to get started…
Choose a Topic You Care About:
The easiest speech to write is one for which you already know and understand the topic. Writing a speech, and then delivering on a topic that doesn’t interest you will also likely disinterest your audience. Write about something that interests you, or better, one that you feel passionate about. If you have been assigned a topic, you need to decide what it is that makes you care about that topic and then write about it so that your audience will want to hear about it.
Know Your Audience:
Think about the make-up of the audience that will be listening to your speech. There’s a difference in how you interact with your professional and social peers; delivering a public speech follows the similar difference in expectation. Age, education and venue are other factors to consider. You want to speak to your audience in an engaging manner, so you must be sure that you are communicating to them in familiar terms.
Combat Writers’ Block by Starting with a Bullet List:
A list of general ideas does not need to have perfect formatting, nor even be typed on a computer. You can write this on the back of a lunch napkin, for all it matters! What does matter is that you have ideas that are relating to or are sub-categories of your main topic/title. If you haven’t gotten that far, write down topic ideas, then take those titles and write a list of ideas. Once you have something in writing in front of you, the task will not feel so large.
Start Writing for Each Point:
Once you have 4-5 ideas written down, pick the one that immediately jumps out at you and start writing. Don’t worry about sentence structure, perfect wording or order. You’ll have time later to edit, right now you simply want to write. As you write you will likely find yourself swerving towards a line of thought and ideas that hadn’t been forthcoming in step 3 are suddenly filling your head. Go with it! It’s always easier to remove content and edit for too much length than it is to add more.
Edit & Proofread:
Read the written draft once, fixing mistakes, wording and sentence problems. You may want to remove entire sections, change their order or add more to a section in order to complete a thought. Then, read it aloud and repeat. Words that appear great on paper often do not “hear” as well to your audience. I recommend repetition of this step at least 3 times. Feel like you’re missing something? Have someone else read the draft to ensure you’re not lulled into a rhythm that causes you to miss important or difficult.
You have your material, now you need to practice it a few times, making only minor changes for rhythm. You have done the hard work; you have written the speech. Now all that’s left is to deliver your topic in a sincere and engaging manner. Congratulations!

1. Write your own introduction. Probably someone else is going to introduce you. Write the words yourself, making it brief, pertinent, and emphasizing your credentials.
2. Know your audience. Make sure you know exactly who is going to be in the audience, why they are there, and why they invited you to speak.
3. Check the setting. Go to the facility early to make sure you’re comfortable in the surroundings. Check the microphone, lighting, audio/visual equipment, and any other factors that may affect your performance. Meet the audience members as they arrive, this is a great way to build rapport and a captive audience.
4. Start with a bang. The first thirty seconds have the most impact. Don’t waste these precious seconds with “Ladies and Gentlemen” or a weather report. Come out punching with a startling statement, quote, or story.
5. Use humor with caution. Don’t start with a joke unless you are absolutely brilliant at it. If you bomb, you’re going to lose any credibility you have. And if your only humorous material is at the beginning, the audience will be disappointed when you become serious.
6. Limit your topics. If you’re giving a half-hour speech, don’t expect to tell the audience everything you know. Pick two or three important points. Embellish your points with story and examples.
7. Structure your information. You and your audience will remember your points better if you have a clear outline. For example, start by saying, “Here are the five questions I’m asked most.” One great structure is the three Alcoholics Anonymous statements: “This is where I was” — “This is where I am now” — “This is how I got here.” (You can reverse the first two, beginning with where you are today and then contrast it with where you started from.)
8. Use handouts. If your presentation involves statistics and analytical data, put them in a handout that the audience can refer to. Don’t bore them by reciting a plethora of numbers. Stories are what make a talk memorable and lively.
9. Don’t read your speech. Look your audience in the eye. Write down key points or statements so you can refer to them, but deliver the rest of it spontaneously making eye contact. Practice with a tape recorder or in front of friends and family. After every point, ask yourself, “Who cares?” If no one does, omit it.
10. End with a bang. Write a strong and memorable closing statement or vivid example. Then memorize it so, no matter what distractions may occur, you can always “bring it home.” When the time comes, deliver your closing line directly to the audience, then accept their applause.

You have read, or heard me say, stories make a speech or sales presentation more interesting, memorable and ‘visual.’ Remember, your audience remembers what they ‘see’ in their minds more than the words you use. In my sales training I recommend you call your satisfied clients and interview them about their experience of doing business with you.
Follow this formula:
- Situation – the problem they had before you did business together
- Solution – what product, service or advice did you give that solved that problem
- Success – how has their condition changed… in their words.
To customize your talks interview ‘heroes’ from your company if you are delivering an internal presentation, or from your client’s ‘heroes’ if they hired you to speak. When you interview your ‘hero’ start at the beginning of the incident they are telling you about. Get as many details as you need to make the story interesting. As Alfred Hitchcock said, “Movies are like life with all the dull parts left out.” Also, use as many of their words as possible. For example, when I was interviewing Nancy Albertson from Sprint about her simple idea that made Sprint $13 million dollars at the time I interviewed, my first question was “What is your title?” She replied, “I’m just a secretary. I guess you call me a big gal with big ideas.” That is colorful dialogue…and she said it. That was a good start. Her story was brilliant. In the retelling is came alive as her actual conversation was used throughout. Don’t report on the conversation, repeat the actual words.
As screen writer Robert McKee says, “Stories are the creative conversion of life itself into a more powerful, clearer, more meaningful experience. They are the currency of human contact.”

Find the defining moment, the New York Times way.
When Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Carlie LeDuff had o take his turn writing profiles about 9-11 victims for the New York Times, he used an interesting interviewing technique.
He’d call a member of the victim’s family and ask for the most defining moment in the person’s life. Then he’d say, I’ll call back in half an hour to give you time to think about it.
The results: mini-profiles that went beyond the conventional data of a person’s life.
“I was very aware that these profiles were the last thing — they were for history,” LeDuff says. “I didn’t want to write, ‘He was a dog person.’”

Look right through the “rules” you have been trained to follow since day one. After all, you’re here because you want to be different. And to be different, you can’t go around the conventional road. It’s time to take risks!
1) Exercise Your Ears.
While eavesdropping is not really good etiquette, it can lead you to think of all sorts of interesting speech topics. You don’t have to act all sneaky and press your ear against doors. Sometimes, you just can’t help but overhear bits and pieces of information.
If you’re a commuter, hearing other people’s stories is almost always a given. When you’re on a train, for example, it’s impossible not to hear passengers talking about this and that. What you have to train yourself for is to pick up those bits that matter.
2) Do Something Different.
If you have never tried bowling before, what’s stopping you from trying on those bowling shoes? A new experience is something that excites both the mind and the body.
Change is inevitable. And perhaps this change is what you need to get out of your rut and come up with interesting speech topics. Don’t look at things with too literal a mind. Enjoy these new experiences and you’ll find yourself opening up to new and brighter ideas.

Update yourself constantly. Everyday, something new is happening in some area of the world. Or even in your city for that matter.
When you tune in to the latest news, or surf online for the latest hot topics, you’ll be able to come up with ideas which are relevant and which affect a lot of people. Chances are, the people who are to witness your actual speech are affected by it as well.
Coming up with interesting speech topics is like trying to learn something new. Don’t keep looking back at your old self. As they say, how can you fill your cup when it’s already full? Empty your cup and welcome new ideas.

If you plan to do public speaking the topic of your speech is a vital consideration because if you choose the wrong topic, even the greatest presentation will fall on deaf ears and an empty room. Speaking to a room full of chairs is not very fun or rewarding.
Here are 6 top tips to terrific speech selection so your speech will be a hit and you won’t fall flat on your face:
1. Speak about the “hot topic of the day”
This is a bit controversial because today’s hot topic is tomorrow’s cold topic. You may pack rooms now, but be prepared to quickly shift topics when the hot topic falls out of favor. If you’re going to create a speech based on a currently hot topic, I suggest you don’t invest a lot of your time in crafting your speech because by the time you’re done polishing it the hot topic might already be yesterday’s old news.
2. Speak about a “soft topic”
Soft topics are topics such as leadership, motivation, and improving morale. Soft topics are more difficult to sell because those hiring you to speak will typically want some kind of measurable results, especially if you’re being hired by a company.
3. Speak about a “hard topic”
Hard topics are topics such as improving sales, increasing worker efficiency, and decreasing costs or expenses. Hard topics are easier to sell because they provide some kind of measurable results.
4. Speak to your passion
This is a very common “mantra” that speaker’s club and organizations repeat over and over, but this may actually be one of the weakest was to select a topic. Their reasoning is that if you speak from a place of passion, then that passion will carry over to your presentation and make for a great speech. But if your passion is basket weaving, your audience may be quite limited.
5. Speak to make positive change
Is there a political cause care very much about? Is there some local cause you’d like to champion? Is there a charity you’d like to help out? Speaking on behalf of the organizations that further those causes can give you plenty of public speaking opportunities.
6. Speak to promote your business
This is my personal favorite and my area of specialty. Public speaking is the fastest, easiest, most fun and least expensive way to promote yourself and your business. And, it’s the most effective because you get immediate results. People see you as the expert, they instantly get to know you and get a good feeling about you. There are tons of opportunities and venues where you can speak on your topic of expertise and get tremendous exposure for you and your business.
Summary:
