Speaking engagements are a great way to build your business. Having a speaker’s profile is a simple tool you can use to help you get more speaking engagements.

By public speaking, I’m referring to speaking in front of a live audience, or being a guest on a tele-seminar, podcast or online radio show or so forth. And rest assured, there are plenty of organizations in your community who are actively looking for speakers. Your local chamber of commerce and local networking groups are great places to start. If you are involved in social media, you can use your connections there to find speaking engagements. It seems that there is no lack of places to speak.

To help you book more speaking engagements, I suggest creating a speaker’s profile. This is sometimes called a one-sheet. It’s simple and short document that you can use in two different ways. First, you can send it to interested parties who request for you to speak at their event. Second, you can create a list of associations, organizations, groups or other events where you would like to speak and send your one-sheet to them along with a cover letter.

Either way you use it, I find that this document builds instant credibility. Here is a list of things you can include. You may have other categories depending on your industry, but this will get your creative juices flowing.

Your Name: Don’t assume they know your name. List it here.

Phonetic Pronunciation of Your Name: If you have a tricky name like mine, provide direction on how it is pronounced. For example, my speaker’s profile says this: Lee pelt (emphasis on Lee).

Company Name: List your company name.

Your Title: Use your formal title, or if you have a fun moniker that you go by, put it here.

Your Web Sites: List up to three web sites starting with your main site.

Category: List your areas of concentration. For example, mine are Marketing, Client Attraction, Business Development and Business Success for Solopreneurs, Micropreneurs and Women-Owned Businesses. This is particularly useful if you are sending it to groups who don’t already know you.

Phone Number: Your direct number.

Fax Number: Your fax number.

Email Address: Yours, not your assistant’s.

Physical Address: Your full address.

Assistant Contact Information: Provide their name and contact information.

Logos and Headshot: Provide a URL where they can download your logo or headshot.

Your Bio: If you have more than one version of your bio, use the one that you’d like to use for your introduction.

Title of Session: Give your speech a memorable title.

Description of Session: Write a short (around 125 words) description of your speech that they can copy and paste to use for promotional purposes in their ezine, newsletter, blog, web site and so forth. Make it as easy as possible for them to promote the speech.

Top Five Things the Audience Will Learn: Every host wants to be sure that their audience will learn something of great value. List at least five things they will learn and make them big and bold enough that you feel like you should charge for it. Providing tremendous value will make people like you. It builds the know/like/trust factor which helps you turn prospective clients into paying clients – and eventually into raving fans!

Opening Interview Questions: Provide some questions to help the interviewee guide the conversation in case they like an interview format.

One Final Wrap Up Interview Question: Provide one big question at the end. It is usually something like this. “How can my listeners learn more about you and your services?” Or, if you have cleared a special offer with your host, the question could be, “You have something special for my listeners/attendees. Can you share that with us now?”

Product For Sale: Provide the name of the product or service your are promoting on the call or in the speech. Also include a URL so your host can view it online. Check with the host prior to making an offer because many times organizations or businesses have a certain way they like to deal with product or service promotions.

Equipment Needed: If you need a projector or white board or any other equipment, list it here. However always follow up on this to be sure it’s ready for you when you arrive.

Speaking Testimonials: Showcase your experience. Provide a few testimonials from previous speaking engagements or a list of previous speaking engagements. If you don’t have any yet, just leave this section off until you do.

It’s pretty straight forward, right? You can pull this together in an hour or less. But don’t let the simplicity of this document fool you. Having a sheet like this will set you apart from others. It will help you to increase the number of speaking engagements you get and it sets the stage to create a really great experience for you, the host and the audience.

Good luck! Keep me posted on your progress. I want to hear about your forthcoming speaking engagements!

You may be an amazing speaker, but in order for your public speaking business to survive, you will need audiences who will pay to listen to you. Instead of paying for lots of ads to promote your business, you want to spend your marketing efforts where you will get the best results: networking and showing people what you’ve got.

Marketing in this way enables you to do more of what you do best: public speaking. You do not have to spend a majority of your time marketing, which takes away from the time you have available for speaking engagements. Instead, you can sell yourself to 10, 20 or even 100 people in one hour and grow your public speaking business faster.

1. Volunteer to Get Your Business Off the Ground

Speaking for free may sound like a way to not earn money – but in reality, it is a cost-effective way to market your public speaking service. Not only do you gain exposure to several audiences, you can establish a relationship of goodwill with potential clients.

There is no hard selling here, and people are more likely to want to hire you for future paid speaking engagements because they see you a a good person and want to reciprocate the favor. Do not underestimate the power of “charity work.”

2. Meet the Right People Through Organizations

Join trade organizations in your industry; ones that match the topics you speak about. This is a simple way to get connected directly to people in a particular industry that tend to be leaders and decision makers. Many of these people want to excel in their field, network and participate in group activities.

Whether organization members do the hiring for speaking engagements or they know contacts involved in event planning that could land you a job, sharing your skills and getting involved in industry organizations can provide you with lots of speaking opportunities.

You can use the search engines to find a list of trade associations and industry organizations to contact. Joining your local Chamber of Commerce can also connect you with potential clients.

3. Get Listed in Online Directories and Have Clients Calling You

Speaker Services and Speaker Zone are two directory websites that connect speakers with audiences. Organizations and businesses use these sites to find speakers for their events, and it is an easy way to reach new clients that is easy and convenient for them.

For a fee, you can list your speaking service in one of many different categories. Describe the topics you cover, the geographic locations where you are available to speak and the rates you charge. You can also share your experience, skills and even a video of you speaking.

Getting your first clients will be the hardest part. Once you begin speaking to groups, the contacts, referrals and repeat business you get tends to grow exponentially. Instead of going out and searching for audiences for your public speaking business, you will find that people will be calling you.

When running broadcast media training, we tend to focus more on practicing TV interviews than radio interviews. You can argue with some justification that ‘if you can do a TV interview you can do a radio interview’. After all, with TV you have much more to worry about — what you look like, where you look, have I got any awkward mannerisms that will make me look foolish on the air?

Radio is easy isn’t it, you’ve just got to chat?

Errrr . . . . . well . . . . . not quite.

Here are some ways you might play a radio interview differently from its TV counterpart.

A first obvious difference is that if you have prepared properly for your interview, you will have a piece of paper with a few key bullet points you’re ready to get across – backed up where possible with some good examples, anecdotes or statistics. On TV you have to put this away before you go on the air – nobody wants to see you reading from a crib-sheet.

However on radio you can (and should) have this in front of you, as a handy reminder in case your mind goes blank, or you suddenly can’t remember that key figure. Glance down at it before you start, or while the interviewer is talking, in case there is something important you may have missed.

With both radio and TV you need to put energy in your voice so you sound lively not flat and dull – an extra 20% above your standard speaking voice is usually about right. On TV you have got to be careful that this energy does not translate into arms waving about and head bobbing – hugely distracting for the audience – but with radio you don’t have to worry about this. Bob around as much as you like if this helps you to make it lively – just be careful not to get too carried away and clonk the microphone.

On TV they tell you to smile so you don’t look miserable – surely that’s one thing you don’t have to worry about on radio? Far from it. Unless it is a really serious topic, put warmth in your voice by lightening up your expression – as they say, you can ‘smile on the radio’ – and the listeners will really notice.

For obvious reasons, it’s much more common on radio than TV to be interviewed over the telephone. If this opportunity comes up for you, go into a quiet room and close the door behind you – ensure small children, pets etc are kept well away so you are not distracted. Ensure you talk on a landline as mobile signals are of poorer quality and can drop out. In fact, turn your mobile phone off so it does not go off in the middle of the interview. Get a glass of water in case your throat dries.

Be clear about your audience and make sure you pitch the message appropriately – without confusing jargon. Radio is a medium for big-picture broad-brush points, not intricate detail.

If you have something to sell, make sure you do not over-sell. There is nothing more annoying to the listener (and the host) than somebody pushy who goes over the top with product plugs. You may get away with it once, but you won’t get invited back again.

Then, remember to enjoy it! If you are having a good time, the interview is likely to make good listening too.

Let’s face it times have changed and it’s important for you to keep up! Not only keep up with the changing times but learn how to embrace the younger generation of meeting planners and organizers. When I look back many years ago (and still today) speakers were sending out their speakers kit to meeting planners and organizers in hopes that they would open up their packet of information and hire them to speak at their next event, unfortunately and in most cases, that’s not the way it worked and it became a frustrating struggle and still is for many speakers.

What happens to all those pieces of marketing material your still sending off? All the DVD demos you worked so hard on and invested so much money in, all the material you had printed and copied and spent hundreds of dollars doing so, what happens to all of it once it leaves your hands? The truth is they end up gathering dust on the planners shelf or possibly tossed out… Harsh, I know but true. Why? Because not only have times now changed but planners get hundreds of unsolicited packets of information that makes it impossible for them to get through nor do they want to, plus they have many other tasks on their plate besides finding a speaker for the their event. Best advice on this; do not send out all your marketing material unless requested by the hiring party.

How do you solve this problem and also how can you reach out to the younger generation of planners? First, stop sending your speaker kit information through the mail unless requested, I am not by any means saying not to do mailing campaigns but to do it effectively using simple campaigns such as postcard campaigns to a very targeted group. Second make sure you have a strong online presence and that you’re embracing social media. Who makes up the majority of planners today? Yes, it’s the younger generation and where do you find them? They’re online and hanging out in the social media crowd, they’re interacting, looking, searching and finding their experts online and a lot of them through social media outlets or through social media outlets that lead them back to your strong built platform on your website. Many of your younger generations of speakers are going to have this down to a science already, they are amidst the social media realm, they know how to use it and embrace it to benefit the success of their speaking business.

So, I say to those of you who may think using social media is a waste of time and you prefer to stay in ‘old school’ mode that you may want to really rethink your strategy because if you don’t get yourself online, build yourself a strong online platform which includes embracing social media today then you’re going to find that your speaking business is going to suffer, it will become a struggle for you to keep up with your competitors. You may think you have enough referrals to stay afloat and that’s great but what about new, what about keeping up with the changing times? My suggestion is to hop aboard, enjoy the ride and join the thousands of speakers that have learned to use social media to their advantage, leverage it and build a successful speaking business.

Perhaps you already set yourself up with a Twitter account, a Facebook fan page, YouTube, LinkedIn, and more but you’re not getting the results you thought you would and you just don’t know what the heck to do with it all, so much to do, so much to learn and so little time to do it especially when you’re trying to grow a speaking business. But this part of your speaking business is an important part and it’s called marketing today, something that needs to be learned, something that needs to be done on a regular basis and done effectively to get the results that you want. In my many years of working with speakers I have come to understand the top three important ingredients of speaking success. Be a specialist and know who your audience is…who you’re meant to serve. Know how to market effectively and keep up with the changing times (this builds a strong expert platform) Build relationships and follow up. That’s it, well there’s more to each one, but in a nutshell if you can figure out how to leverage and implement them properly you’re going to see amazing results.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Being the poster child for accountability, I don’t have a problem with sharing my mistakes with the world. I look at it from the perspective that my blunders save you time, provide learning lessons, and result in more money in your pockets.

I spend quite a bit of time researching and learning from other speakers and coaches by listening to their audios, reading reports and newsletters, and participating in tele-seminars. Every guru I’d listened to always boasted about the number of subscribers they had on their lists. I’d never listened to anyone that was just getting started or who taught from a beginner’s level. As such, I wasn’t aware of the importance of creating your email campaigns and sending them out regardless of the number of people on your list. In this instance, quantity trumps quality – some is better than none and you need to market to your list of 10 or less just as you would to a list of thousands.

You need to already have the infrastructure in place to support your growing list and be ready for the influx of potential clients, students, and mentees that are awaiting you. Let’s assume that you send your newsletter out once a month. If each of those 10 folks on your list forwarded your newsletter to just one person and that person became a new subscriber, your list would double in roughly 30 days. Your list of 10 has now grown to 20!

There will be those folks who tell you that it’s a waste of time and money to market to such a small group of people. I’m here to tell you that the people who have tens of thousands on their lists didn’t just wake up one day to those numbers. It was a gradual process – it may have taken some longer than others, but it didn’t just happen because the opt-in fairy paid them a visit.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

“If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” ~ Coachfucious

The first and foremost thing you need to do is be ready and ably to sell your product or service in a snapshot. In order to get he clients you are looking for you absolutely need to be prepared to meet with your clients wherever they are and whatever they do. What will set you apart from all the rest of the people in your business is the MANTRA that you will sing to enchant your clients and get them close to you.

This mantra identifies who you are, what you do and why your client will choose you over all the others on the market and is most commonly known as elevator speech.

Before we create one, we will go though the brainstorming process.

There are a couple of tough questions that can be answered before we roll up our sleeves and start creating our client magnet.

1. Who am I? In what capacity I want to serve you?

2. What business I am in? What results do my business promise to you as a client?

3. Who is my client? How does he look like?

4. What makes me different from the competition? Why should the client do business with me?

5. What are the benefits of my customer when buying my product / services?

Those questions, when systemized, don’t look as if they will come out of the page and bite you but when you think about it 90% of the time to come up with ideas is very difficult. Usually this uneasiness to decide on the right answers for you and your business springs from the fact that most of us consciously or not are employees in their business and being an owner of a business is just that – being employed by yourself to perform the job task- owner.

The way to go out of this trap where you end up employing yourself and go into the thinking hat that is only concerned with how to elevate your business the answers will start flowing to you.

Whenever you are ready with our own answers to the clarification questions, you can start writing your elevator speech. This speech you will be able to say wherever you go whatever you do and you will be able to sell your product or service in 30 seconds. And I will show example with my own elevator speech.

1. For whom are you offering your product / service? Who is your client?

Your sentence will start with “for” as in: “For unstoppably determined people”

2. What is it that your customer wants / needs and you are offering?

Your sentence will start with “who” as in: “Who want to live with passion and be financially independent”

3. What product or service you are offering?

Your sentence will start with “the” as in: “The Life & Money Coaching of Tsvetanka (Sue) Petrova”

4. What category does your product or service satisfy?

Your sentence will start with “is a” as in: “Is a walk through into the world of achieving your goals”

Quite often, schools, universities, organizations, and community groups hold events that need guest speakers. These guest speakers may provide keynote messages, motivational talks, or vital information on a particular subject.

Such events are major opportunities for speakers to present their skills and topics while getting paid. Becoming guests at these affairs enhances the speaker’s reputation and expands buyer prospects. Getting into these events is quite challenging though. To become guests, in corporate conferences and universities requires a great deal of self-promotion and credentials.

When you think about it, it is natural for planners or organizers of these events to invite speakers that are known and reputed for their achievements. Speakers that are perceived to be great at what they do are logically prioritized and some groups will favor celebrities in the field. Not only does it attract more people to the event; it will also ensure favorable results and productivity.

So what exactly needs to be done? How does one become a guest speaker at schools, conferences, and events?

The answer relies on the effectiveness of the speaker’s marketing approach. The key here is to establish a reputation of expertise and professionalism. Also, an understanding of the niche is essential so the speaker can be clear about the promotional tactics to be employed to attract the organizers.

That is the basis for your marketing materials and created products. The products you release in the market should provide an impression of authority and extensive knowledge. The niche will not fail to notice this and the speaker will have an imprint in their minds. Thus, they are called upon when they are needed.

Marketing materials should show a speaker’s specialization. If the speaker intends to break into the college market, a speaker should state and emphasize in brochures that his or her focus is on youth motivation and school leadership. Perception is reality. It is important that speakers should be perceived appropriately in the niche.

Personal branding is one way to create better recall and establish a reputation. Once the market labels your professional services, you will begin to get clients easily in specific niches. This is why speakers should carefully plan their branding and labeling.

It may take some time to get to the point where you become a primary commodity as a speaker. Big events require only the best speakers and through experience and strategical marketing approach, you will eventually reach that favorable position. Once you reach that point, you can become a guest speaker at any event.

There are plenty of ways to become a guest speaker at schools, conferences, and events. However, persistence and smart work is imperative to get there. Nothing will happen to people who just wait for something to occur. To get ahead as a speaker, you must get out there and network. Recognize the needs of your market and expand your database of prospective clients.

Think of it this way, you create the article one and comprise a short 2 – 3 sentence bio and you’ll have that help you for on condition that it’s available!

The direction you market yourself will determine whether you will have a great career or not. Start employing these avenues of getting your name out there and begin to get noticed by meeting planners and speaker bureaus. Start marketing yourself right now!

1. Find your niche and audience…

…once you do dig deeper and really narrow in on a very specific group of people, a group that you are meant to serve, one that desperately needs your solution to their very specific problem. Find the problem. Offer the solution.

2. Create a brand for your speaking business.

What do you want to be known for? Research your competitors and see how they’re positioning themselves… set yourself apart from them and be different, don’t be afraid to be the purple cow in the field. Be clear with your brand; do not confuse your audience. It really needs to be focused, targeted and clear. Be consistent with your brand as it will follow you everywhere and on everything from your marketing material to the way you answer your calls.

3. Create an online presence:

A website that is designed to meet the needs of your target audience and one that includes all the necessary ingredients for online success as a speaker (this is vital because about 95% + planners and media professionals are going online to find their experts and you need to make sure you’re easily found with a very clear message)

4. Create essential marketing material

5. Set up marketing strategies…

…to be applied in your speaking business and start building your platform. Let your platform be clear and targeted.

6. Create products, products, products.

You have so much knowledge and talent built up inside and you need to get it out in different learning formats for your audience. This will build your credibility and create a stream of income for you.

7. Learn the importance of building relationships.

I can’t stress this enough… it’s all in the relationships.

8. Follow up!

Follow up is essential especially in the speaking business. Don’t worry your not being a nuisance but showing you are very interested and are the perfect speaker for their event. Now, don’t overdo the follow up to where you have exhausted them but just a few simple follow up calls or emails to let them know you are the perfect one to provide solutions for their audience.

If you want to secure your first speaking engagement and create a full schedule then it’s vital to take steps in building your speaking business. Don’t hop from point A to C because you will end up back tracking and in the end only feel frustrated by the endless wasted hours and the dent you put in your pocket book. So take your time in starting your speaking business and if done right you can have a successful and lucrative business!
