Vocal Variety: A Goofy Exercise in Public Speaking

Practice your variation in pitch with the goofy exercise I’m about to share with you.

Please note that although this may seem funny, may attract some attention, and may even get you committed if you do it at the wrong place & time, it works.

Say a phrase – anything you want. It could be “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.” Nothing to it. Now say the phrase again, varying the pitch on each syllable. You can sing each syllable, or just say it, but you much vary the pitch, or tone of each syllable. Come on, do it now!

Good. Now do it again, varying your pitch even more. This exercise will seriously help you develop the pitch aspect of your vocal variety. It will help keep you out of that fatal monotone zone. Do it just a couple of times a day, and you will be amazed at how much it will enhance your speaking. The way it works is that it loosens up your speaking range, and your subconscious brain will automatically find ways to express what you have to say with this extended range.
